Medicines to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia

On October 9, 2002, dutasteride that was developed by GSK was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the use in the treatment of prostate enlargement. On June 19, 2008, GSK announced that the FDA approved for the combination of idutasteride and tamsulosin in the treatment of prostate hyperplasia. In China, on of two elderly men over the age of 60 have benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can cause urinary tract symptoms, including significant rise in frequency of urination, thin urine flow, bladder emptying difficulties, as well as nocturia. It even can cause serious complications, like acute urinary retention, reduce the patients’ life quality, and affect their social life. Dutasteride is the first and the only dual 5α reductase inhibitor to be used in the treatment of prostatic hyperplasia.
